Your Most Valuable Possession

"A wise man ought to realize that health is his most valuable possession." - Hippocrates

It is a sad statement of modern society when many of man's "most valuable" possessions are his house or car, which can be taken away in an instant!

If a man has his health he can rebuild his house or buy a new car.  It's also sad that we usually provide the normal regular maintenance to our cars, (that we will usually sell or junk within 5 years), but we fail to maintain the bodies we will keep for 70, 80 or even 100 years!

Hippocrates was a Greek physician and philosopher and has the honor of being called the Father of Medicine.  Honestly, it is with good reason that the medical profession must take a Hippocratic oath, I just wish they read it once in a while!

Hippocrates was an amazing man, surviving 20 years of being jailed!  He was the first person to say that diseases were of environmental factors such as diet and how the person lived, not curses from the gods.

Hippocrates has tru...

You Are Designed To Feel Good

So, I can't say that I am a fan of Kevin Trudeau, but I can say that I'm a fan of the concept behind this.

When I see new patients and we cover the reasons that brought them into my office there's inevitable shock when, after using Applied Kinesiology, we discover the root of their functional problem.

This is not saying the problem is pathological in nature, simply it's a breakdown of your natural ability to heal.  When we get in touch with our bodies and make every inch of them sing in harmony, as the body was intended to do, our body feels good

A chiropractic adjustment can alleviate quite a bit of issues, but marrying chiropractic with Applied Kinesiology really let's the body talk to us.  Many people that see me have been living with pain, less energy, truly deciding this is a way of life for them.  When we get in touch with the underlying problem(s) they feel good!  The body is amazing.  It's designed to heal itself; when you remove the obstacles impairing nature the body w...

Wednesday Q & A with Dr. J. J. - Why The Focus On Concussions In The NFL?

If you're like me, you’ve probably spent the past two weekends glued to your TV and computer watching football and tracking your fantasy football teams. (And, if you're like me, you've watched your fantasy teams get shellacked two weeks in a row!)

You've probably heard or read about the focus at all levels of football to diminish the occurrence of concussions. The question is: Why do concussions matter so much? The actual medical name for a concussion is Mild Traumatic Brain Injury. This brain injury term is a much scarier and much more accurate way of describing what a concussion is.

The brain is three pound of fat and protein, it's encased in the rigid bony skull, and the dura attaches it to the skull. The brain is also cushioned and surrounded in the skull by cerebral spinal fluid that acts a lot like a liquid airbag around your brain. The primary proposed etiology of a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is that the jolt to the head is hard enough that the brain will strike, or come clos...

Dr JJ's Quote of the Day - You are a Soul

"You don't have a soul.  You are a soul.  You have a body." - C.S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis is one of the great Christian literary figures of the last century.  He is probably most famous for The Chronicles of Narnia, however, he wrote several excellent books on his views of Christianity.  An early mentor of his was J. R. R. Tolkien, the writer of The Lord of the Rings, and they had many great debates on Christianity. I love this quote for many, many different reasons!

Lets start with the definition of soul. Webster's defines soul as "the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal."  I like this, but I think you can add in the animating divine spark that is in us all.

It's this divine spark that is what we are down at our core.  We are luminous beings, not crude matter (Yoda).  Another reason I enjoy this quote is that it makes a reader consider what's inside.  While regarding what's on the inside, I hope a reader will understand that while you ...

Share The Health - Measles Outbreak

While I was enjoying my coffee and surfing the net this morning I came across a blog that really impressed me.  With news agencies reporting the US Centers for Disease Control's prediction that this year's measles outbreak will be one of the worst in more than a decade, measles is certainly getting it's 15 minutes of fame.  And, in a way, so am I, along with numerous other informed parents, choosing not to vaccinate their children.

The Gianelloni Family blog hits home and really touches on the reasons I advise my patients against vaccinations.  It's my pleasure to share this incredibly insightful blog with you! Gianelloni Family

I AM...

Two of the strongest words a person can say aloud or think about themselves:  I Am.

Those two words define not just our lives, but who we really are.  This "self-talk" can create or destroy so much in our lives.  I am - fat, I am - stupid, or I am - not worthy are all ways that we define our lives in negative ways.  I am - beautiful, I am - brilliant, or I am - worthy,  build up a positive mental story of the amazing life we all deserve.

I see patients and students convincing themselves they are not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough to be a success in what they desire to accomplish.  A change in thought pattern, their "self-talk", could create the mental power to make success happen!  I would bet most people that talk negatively to themselves would never let anyone else say those things to them.  We are such self-critics when we need to discover our self-praising.  Take a moment today and concentrate on two words:  I.  Am.  And be conscious of what follows, because what...

Wednesday Q & A with Dr. JJ - My Shins Really Hurt When I Run, What Can I Do?

So, it feels like someone is sticking a knife in your shin when you get done with your run or if you have to move quickly to catch the toddler before he falls? You could have shin splints, or, worst case scenario, a stress fracture of one of the bones in your lower leg. I'll discuss stress fractures another day; today let's focus on shin splints. There are a couple of potential causes for shin splints, and neither of them has much to do with overuse. In my clinical experience when a person presents with shin splints it is usually an imbalance of the joints of the foot or the muscles of the lower leg; mainly the posterior tibialis muscle.

There are two types of shin splints - anterior and posterior.  The anterior type of shin splint usually involves the anterior tibialis muscle; this is the muscle that is on the front part of your tibia (shin).  It is typically painful in running or downhill walking and can be very sharp, knife-like pain in that muscle.

The posterior type, involves th...

Friday Feast - Paleo Avocado Tomato and Bacon Salad

Paleo Avocado Tomato and Bacon Salad

This is a great, quick, really delicious Paleo Avocado Tomato and Bacon Salad recipe.  We use this as a quick meal when we don't feel like cooking.  I have to admit that I am a bit of a bacon snob.  There are only a couple of farms that I will use pork products from, Pederson's Farms and Applegate Farms.  There's a major difference between responsibly farmed and humanely raised meats, especially pork products. Try them out!  There's a also a big difference in the taste of the meat from these farms compared to other pork on the market.  Let me know what you think!  If you're not dairy sensitive you can add feta cheese to this and it really adds to the flavor.  If you're looking to up the protein to help balance your blood sugar then add some pan fried shrimp to the dish.

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz. Bacon
  • 4 Avocados
  • 6 Plum Tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • Salt

Directions:

  • Pan fry the bacon until slightly crisp.
  • Chop the tomatoes and avocados i
